In 1981 Woodwork booked time
at Winnipeg’s Century 21 studio to cut
their lone album, the hard rocking Anyday
Now produced by Wood and engineered
by Ralph Watts. The album boasts all
original material from Wood and Bedernjak.
“We had written a bunch of songs and were
having a lot of success with them
onstage,” Wood recalls, “so we figured we
would go into Century 21 studios and
recorded it over three days. We kind of
thought having a record out would help
propel us along further, maybe get us out
of the pubs. I didn’t quite do that but it
was what it was. There were some neat
songs on that record.”
Released on their own Pear Records (“We
were inspired by Apple Records so we
figured let’s go with pear,” Wood
explains) the album represents a glimpse
into the exciting local rock scene of the
early ‘80s. Wood dedicated the album his
mother. “She was always pretty excited
about everything I was doing. She
co-signed a loan for the band to get a
truck, a PA and a light show.” Wood,
however, has mixed feelings about the
front cover photo taken in an emptied
swimming pool in a St. James apartment
complex. “The photographer had this idea
to hang guitars around us so we just went
with it.”
A clever addition to the album is the
backwards message at the bottom of the
back cover which, when read forward, says,
“Play this album loud.”
